Shoe Width: According to Dr. Doug Butler, DVM, the proper shoe width is determined by measuring the thickness of the wall at the toe of the hoof, then multiply by 2. For example 3/8" x 2 = 3/4" shoe. Due to the amount of concussion with the ground, thr front hoof toe wall is normally greater in thickness than the rear hoof toe wall. Reference: 7
